As the second step in the STEAM Cathedral “Intro to Motorsports” curriculum tract, Karting 102 introduces students to the art and science of driving on a race track.

Having completed Karting 101, students possess a foundational understanding of how the systems of the kart function separately and now it is time to learn how those systems integrate on track. Less about finding the perfect set-up or the last .01 of a second, Karting 102 instead focuses on safely building basic competence and confidence behind the wheel on track while demystifying the basics of racing line, braking technique, overtaking and defending, competition rules, and track etiquette.

Students also build upon their foundational mechanical skills to learn how to maintain – or fix – a kart while at the track, how to rebuild and re-prep a kart between events, and how to plan for a successful day at the track.

Karting 102 students exhibit a noticeable increase in poise as they begin to realize their ability to develop skills in a new and oft intimidating environment. Their capacity to remain resilient grows as the requirement to perform with consistency increases and they demonstrate skills that enable them to be significantly safer and adept drivers on public roads.

For students who develop a suitable level of proficiency and awareness, the course culminates in their participation in an official sanctioned kart race!
